Supporting Those Who Serve: RCMP Focused Counselling

Working as an RCMP member is not just a career. It is a life changing path to take that often impacts members’ lives in numerous ways – both on and off shift. RCMP members are exposed to a much higher rate of highly stressful and potentially traumatizing experiences than the general public, so it makes sense that they would also struggle with a high degree of mental health difficulties.

Some Common Struggles RCMP Members Face:

  • Operational Stress Injuries (OSI): PTSD, anxiety, and depression resulting from front-line duties.

  • Organizational & Post Stress: Navigating internal dynamics, staffing shortages, and the challenges of remote or isolated postings.

  • Family & Relationship Stressors: Navigating family life as you balance the line of constantly being vigilant and “on” while on-duty. Then trying to turn “off” and relax on days off to be present with your loved ones. Easier said than done to find a helpful integrated balance of two very different ways of being.

  • Burnout & Moral Injury: Processing the emotional fatigue that comes from long-term exposure to high-stakes environments. This can have long-term negative impacts when unsupported throughout your career as an RCMP member.
